Eating More of These Foods Can Add Up to 13 Years of Life, According to Study

According to a new study just published, optimizing your diet to increase consumption of legumes, fruits, and vegetables can increase your life by 13 years! This is especially effective if you start at a young age. But fear not, this way of eating can help people of all ages to improve their quality of life and lower their risk of chronic disease.

The Facts:

According to this study, published in February 2022 by PLOS Medicine , researchers in Norway used existing data and meta-analyses from the Global Disease Burden that analyzes disease, causes of death and risk factors all over the world. They have found that the biggest gains in longevity came from eating something that Biena holds dear - legumes.

Chickpeas are part of the legume family and are FILLED with nutrients that aren’t just good for you in the short term - they are great for you in the long term. They include healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and antioxidant “phytochemicals” that have been associated with lower risk of chronic disease.

We know that it may sound easy to add more grains, legumes and vegetables to your diet but a lot of Americans struggle with eating enough servings of these foods in their daily lives. A new report from the CDC found that only a mere 10% of Americans are eating their recommended 2-3 cups of vegetables per day, which includes legumes.

How To:

One way to increase longevity is to start the Mediterranean Diet. While undertaking a whole new pattern of eating may seem like a task, you can do small things to get yourself started. A simple start is cooking one meal each week based on beans, whole grains and vegetables all while adding herbs and spices to give your food a kick.
